New Economics for Women (NEW) was named by the Small Business Administration (SBA) as a second Women’s Business Center (SBA) to serve Los Angeles County’s women entrepreneurs and business owners.

SBA Names NEW as Second Women’s Business Center

Throughout the nation, 17 new WBCs were selected to provide one-on-one counseling, training, networking, workshops, technical assistance, and mentoring to women entrepreneurs on numerous business development topics, including business startups, financial management, marketing, and procurement.

The second NEW-WBC will be housed on the South Gate satellite campus of East Los Angeles College through a state-of-the-art education partnership.

“Under the Biden-Harris Administration, we have seen a historic Small Business Boom, with women, especially women of color, filing new business applications at double the rates of men,” said Administrator Guzman.

“The SBA’s expanding network of Women’s Business Centers is meeting these new and established businesses where they are with resources to help them get funding to grow, create jobs, and strengthen our economy.

As we celebrate Women’s History Month, the Biden-Harris Administration is proud to double down on its commitment to expanding opportunity and leveling the playing field for women and all those who have been underinvested in for too long.”

Said Maggie Cervantes, New Economics for Women Executive Director, “ We are honored to be designated as a second Women’s Business Center by the Small Business Administration.

This recognition reaffirms our commitment to empowering women entrepreneurs and bolstering their success.” Dr. Alberto Román, President of East Los Angeles College, said, “East Los Angeles College is proud to partner with New Economics for Women to bring much-needed business development resources to the Gateway Cities region.

We are excited to share ideas, collaborate, and support our students and business community.”

Representative Nanette Barragán (CA-44) said, “This is great news for South Gate and the 44th District! I was proud to work with NEW to showcase their work to provide vital economic mobility resources to thousands of small businesses every year in Southeast Los Angeles.

Our region has the highest number of minority- and women-owned small businesses in the country, and with help from the SBA, NEW will be able to provide more in-depth resources and training to women entrepreneurs right here in California’s 44th District.”

Los Angeles County is home to over 10 million people and is one of the nation’s leading economies. Its diverse economy, talented workforce, and vast industry sectors foster innovation, growth, and entrepreneurship.

NEW has provided vital economic mobility resources to thousands of participants annually for nearly forty years through entrepreneurship, wealth creation, housing, and advocacy for social justice.

In 2020, the SBA named NEW a Women’s Business Center, supporting the under-resourced entrepreneurs of the San Fernando Valley and beyond. To date, it is the nation’s most effective WBC by activity, serving 4,700 unique individuals annually.
