Family Outraged Over Plea Deal in Phoenix Beating Death Case (Video)

Published on

The family of Jake Kelly, a Phoenix man who was beaten to death in August 2023, is speaking out against a recent plea deal offered to one of the individuals involved. Kelly’s mother is particularly upset, expressing that the decision to offer a lighter sentence does not bring justice to her son or hold those responsible accountable. The situation has sparked strong emotions within the family and left many in the community questioning the legal process.

Family Outraged Over Plea Deal in Phoenix Beating Death Case

The Incident: Jake Kelly’s Tragic Death

Jake Kelly was found severely beaten and left unconscious in the driveway of his Phoenix home. According to court records, Kelly was attacked and subsequently placed in a bathtub by the suspects, who allegedly changed his clothes before finally taking him to the hospital a day later. Despite receiving medical treatment, Kelly ultimately succumbed to his injuries. His death has left his mother and loved ones devastated, not only by the loss but also by what they perceive as a lack of justice in the handling of the case.

Plea Deal for One of the Suspects

Recently, one of Kelly’s former roommates, Shannon Young, accepted a plea deal that could result in no jail time. Young, who faced charges related to hindering prosecution, could receive a sentence of up to five years of probation. Prosecutors, however, are not recommending any jail time for her role in the events leading to Kelly’s death. This decision has sparked anger among Kelly’s family, who believe that Young’s involvement warrants a harsher penalty. Young’s mother, expressing her frustration, remarked that this outcome is unacceptable and does not provide the closure the family seeks.

Courtroom Reactions and Sentencing

During a recent court appearance, Shannon Young declined to comment as she exited the courtroom. Initially facing the possibility of a nine-year prison sentence, Young’s plea deal has significantly reduced the potential consequences. As the legal proceedings continue, Young’s plea to hindering prosecution will likely be finalized, sparing her from serving jail time.

Young’s family has expressed discontent with this resolution, arguing that it minimizes her accountability in the brutal beating death of Jake Kelly. Kelly’s mother voiced her disappointment, stating that nothing in the legal process thus far has brought her any sense of justice for her son’s death.

Other Individuals Charged in Connection

The legal process continues for others involved in the case. Cory Young, another individual associated with the incident, remains in custody on charges of hindering prosecution. Additionally, a friend of the Youngs, identified only as Angel, faces a charge of second-degree murder. Jake Kelly’s mother has expressed hope that these individuals will face stricter penalties than Shannon Young and that justice will ultimately prevail.

As she shared her thoughts on the ongoing legal battle, Kelly’s mother revealed that she believes the attack on her son may have been motivated by hate, as Kelly was openly gay. She hopes that Cory Young and Angel will receive the maximum sentences allowed by law, stressing that the leniency shown to Shannon Young is inadequate and does not reflect the severity of the crime.

Calls for Justice and Community Response

The plea deal has prompted Kelly’s family and supporters to call for greater accountability and harsher punishments for those involved in the incident. They argue that the light sentencing recommendations for Shannon Young fail to reflect the gravity of the crime and the lasting impact it has had on the family and community. Kelly’s mother emphasized that she wants those responsible to face the full consequences of their actions, stressing that the loss of her son deserves a stronger response from the legal system.

The family has voiced frustration over the legal process and the perceived lack of communication from the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office. Although they reached out to the office to inquire about the plea deal decision, they received no response. Kelly’s family remains determined to seek justice and closure, hoping that the remaining charges against the other individuals involved will result in more significant penalties.

The Struggle for Closure

As the legal process unfolds, Jake Kelly’s family continues to grapple with their grief and the complexities of the criminal justice system. The leniency shown to Shannon Young has left them feeling that justice has not been fully served. While they await the outcomes for the other individuals involved, Kelly’s loved ones are left to confront the reality of a future without him and the challenges of finding peace in a process they feel has let them down.

In their ongoing pursuit of justice, Kelly’s family stands as a reminder of the need for accountability and fairness in the legal system, particularly in cases of violent crime. The community’s response reflects a shared desire for resolution and underscores the importance of upholding justice for victims and their families.
