Leverage Your Job to Start a Business in 2025

Use Your Job Like College — The 2025 Edition

This is an updated excerpt from my guide for Minority Entrepreneurs, now turbocharged for 2025 with AI, automation, and the creator economy in mind.

Back when I worked at a music industry mag called Urban Network, the office was a circus of infighting, power plays, and toxic politics — mostly from outsiders who didn’t even work there. I was in my mid-twenties, and while everyone else was caught up in the drama, I played a different game. I stayed late, asked questions across departments, and learned how every cog in the machine worked. People thought I was nuts for coming in on weekends, but I wasn’t wasting time — I was going to school. My classroom was the office, and my degree was the know-how to launch my own industry magazine. And that’s exactly what happened.

Fast forward to 2025, and the principle is even more powerful. No matter how much you hate your current job, if you have even a spark of passion, you can use it as your personal business incubator. Think of your job as “college” — but instead of lectures, you get hands-on experience, and instead of tuition, you get paid. And with AI and automation tools now at your fingertips, you can learn faster and work smarter.

For example, if you want to break into digital marketing, why waste two years and thousands on a degree when you can take a part-time gig or freelance role, then use AI-powered platforms to master ad campaigns, content creation, and analytics in real time? Or if you’re eyeing the creator economy, start building your brand on social media while learning the ropes of content production, audience growth, and monetization — all while your day job funds your hustle.

Here’s the deal: many entrepreneurs today start their businesses while still clocking in. This “hybrid path” is safer and smarter. It lets you test ideas, build skills, and keep the lights on. Research shows those who start this way are about a third less likely to fail than those who jump in cold[1].

So instead of rushing to quit, use your current gig to:

  • Learn the ins and outs of your industry by asking questions and volunteering for projects beyond your job description.
  • Leverage AI tools to automate repetitive tasks, freeing up time to experiment with side projects or business ideas.
  • Build your network internally and externally — those connections will be gold when you launch your own thing.
  • Test your business ideas on the side, whether that’s freelancing, consulting, or launching a micro-business in the creator economy.

When I say “use your job like college,” I mean treat every workday as a class, every paycheck as a scholarship, and every challenge as a lesson. This mindset helped me learn fast and build a foundation strong enough to launch my own business. Even if you never want to be your own boss, this approach will level up your career and open doors to better opportunities.
