Updated for 2025: Practical AI & Business Moves
Days once spent rubbing elbows with T.I., Lil’ Kim, and Timbaland have transformed into mornings fueled by coffee, AI-assisted typography, and pixel-perfect design. After 16 years climbing the ranks in the music industry, Erik Ford left his role as VP of Urban Promotions at Atlantic Records to reinvent himself as a self-taught, award-winning designer and digital innovator—now a leading voice for diversity in tech and creative industries.
When record labels started losing their iron grip in the digital age, Erik, a Harlem native who began in a mailroom at Profile Records, found himself downsized. Instead of fading into obscurity, he pivoted, turning a passion for web design into a thriving second career. Today, as Digital Director and founding principal at Heavy Heavy, Erik leads a creative studio that blends storytelling, design, and cutting-edge technology—including AI and automation—to craft authentic brand experiences.
Though art was an early refuge—sketching comic book heroes to escape a tough childhood—Erik never had formal design training. His journey as a self-taught designer reflects the broader challenges faced by people of color in creative tech fields. “I’ve never faced overt racism in design,” Erik says, “but when you look at industry panels or leadership, the lack of diversity is glaring. It’s not about exclusion by force, but about who gets invited to the table.”
Experts like Jessica Cumberbatch Anderson have noted that underfunded arts education and systemic barriers contribute to the persistent underrepresentation of minorities in design. A 2011 survey by A List Apart showed that over 87% of web professionals identified as white, with African Americans making up just 1.2%. Despite some progress, these numbers remain stubbornly low, underscoring the need for visible role models like Erik who prove success is possible.
At Heavy Heavy, Erik champions transparency and adaptability, rejecting the traditional agency model of upselling and overdesign. The studio’s process—Discover, Design, Produce, Launch—integrates AI tools to streamline workflows and enhance creativity without sacrificing the human touch. This approach not only delivers smarter solutions but also opens doors for more inclusive storytelling in the digital economy.
Erik’s work has earned accolades from Awwwards, Best Web Gallery, and others, reflecting his commitment to simplicity and impact. Beyond design, he’s a vocal advocate for diversity in tech, mentoring young creatives and encouraging them to embrace emerging technologies like AI and automation as tools for empowerment.
Originally from Harlem and a Wesleyan University graduate in African American studies, Erik now calls San Antonio home. When he’s not pushing pixels or strategizing brand identities, you might find him hunting for rare fonts, diving into comic books, or cheering on the New York Giants.
